Best and Worst Movies of the Year... So Far

BEST MOVIE: INCEPTION

Runner-up: Winter's Bone

Sure, Christopher Nolan's metaphysical heist flick is only coming out this week and the commercials have been a bit on the mysterious side, but trust us: it's good. From its mind-bending dream-within-a-dream-within-a-dream plot to its way cool special effects, the movie stands head-and-shoulders above an otherwise lackluster movie summer. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt's zero-G fist fight in a hotel hallway is worth the price of admission all by itself.

WORST MOVIE: VALENTINE'S DAY

Runner-up: The Last Airbender

With a star-studded cast (including Oscar winners Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Kathy Bates, and Shirley MacLaine, plus hotties Patrick Dempsey, Jessica Alba, and Eric Dane), you'd expect this Garry Marshall-directed rom-com to be tolerable at the very least. Well, it isn't. In fact, it's the worst movie we've seen in years. From its banal storylines to its dreadful dialogue to its embarrassing lack of laughs and heart, "Valentine's Day" is a lazy day of infamy that nobody should have to suffer through.

French scientists crack secrets of Mona Lisa

PARIS – The enigmatic smile remains a mystery, but French scientists say they have cracked a few secrets of the "Mona Lisa." French researchers studied seven of the Louvre Museum's Leonardo da Vinci paintings, including the "Mona Lisa," to analyze the master's use of successive ultrathin layers of paint and glaze - a technique that gave his works their dreamy quality.
Specialists from the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France found that da Vinci painted up to 30 layers of paint on his works to meet his standards of subtlety. Added up, all the layers are less than 40 micrometers, or about half the thickness of a human hair, researcher Philippe Walter said Friday.
The technique, called "sfumato," allowed da Vinci to give outlines and contours a hazy quality and create an illusion of depth and shadow. His use of the technique is well-known, but scientific study on it has been limited because tests often required samples from the paintings.

FEC: Joe Biden 2008 Presidential Campaign Must Pay $219,000

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) --

Election watchdogs have directed Joe Biden's 2008 presidential campaign to pay the U.S Treasury more than $219,000 to resolve issues caused by sloppy bookkeeping and accepting excessive contributions, including a discounted flight on a private jet.
The audit was released Friday by the Federal Election Commission.
It determined that the Biden campaign accepted an improper corporate contribution in the form of a round-trip flight between New Hampshire and Iowa in June 2007 for three people. The Biden campaign paid GEH Air Transportation $7,911 for the first-class airfare, but regulators say the campaign should have paid the charter rate of $34,800.

David Archuleta [Biography]

Bio

David Archuleta finished second on the seventh season of American Idol. The adorable, talented singer suffered from vocal chord paralysis as a child.
However, the crooner also won Star Search at the age of 12, causing some to wonder if he's overqualified for American Idol. It made no difference throughout the competition, though. Fans love this guy!
Archuleta performed an awe-inspiring rendition of the classic song "Imagine" during the show's top 20 week. It made Paula Abdul cry.
Archuleta's debut album came out on November 11, 2008 and his next in September 2010. He still enjoys a loyal, enthusiastic, fan base.
